Sustainable Wildlife Management

The Sustainable Wildlife Management Programme (SWM) in Guyana is coordinating community-driven initiatives that support food security and traditional livelihoods. Visit Rupununi is one of several local organisations working together on this important long-term programme. The SWM initiatives contribute to maintaining healthy fish and terrestrial wildlife populations. SWM is being implemented by the Guyana Wildlife Conservation and Management Commission in coordination with CIFOR. Find out more about SWM (https://www.swm-programme.info/country-guyana).

The giants of the Rupununi are famous: the world’s largest eagle (Harpy), snake (Green Anaconda), caiman (Black), anteater (Giant), armadillo (Giant), scaled freshwater fish (arapaima), rodent (capybara), river otter (giant) spider (Goliath Birdeater) as well as the most powerful cat (Jaguar) and loudest land mammal (Howler Monkey). What a list!
