Schomburgk’s Peak is named after Sir. Robert Hermann Schomburgk, a German explorer
and surveyor, well known in Guyana and the West Indies for his numerous invaluable
contributions to the country. This 3500ft peak is located in the Kanuku Mountains Protected
Area where there are unusual combinations of forest, savannah, wetland and mixed habitats
that maintain an explosion of wildlife. The Kanukus are also home to the Macushi and
Wapishana people, who have traditionally depended on the mountains for food, water, shelter
and medicines
